Abstract

391,149. Variable-speed and reversing gearing. CLOUDSLEY, J. L., 5, Chancery Lane, London.- (Hayes, F. A. ; Middletown, New Jersey, U.S.A.) Oct. 17, 1931, No. 28921. [Class 80 (ii).] Variable-speed gearing comprising one or more driving-discs 8, 9, a coaxial driven disc 11 and precessionally movable rollers 12 bridging these discs is combined with reversing gearing arranged alongside so as not to increase the overall length of the gearing. The driving discs 8, 9 are keyed on a shaft 5 between Belleville washers 10 and a thrust ball bearing 4. Thrust balls 6 coact with ramps on the disc 8 and on a torque ring 3 connected by a claw member 2 to a clutch shaft 1. The driven double disc 11 carries a ring of clutch and gear teeth 11a adapted to be engaged for forward driving by an internally castellated sleeve 13 sliding on splines 13a on a drum rigid with a tail shaft 14. The neutral position shown is effected by rocking a control lever 15 to cause a selector slider 16 to shift the sleeve 13 out of engagement with the disc 11. To effect reversal, the lever 15 is moved laterally to engage a selector slider arm (not shown) which engages at 17a a sleeve 17 slidable on a fixed shaft 18. This sleeve is formed with toothed gears 19, 20, the former constantly engaging a reversing idler 21 coupled to slide with the sleeve. To bring in the reversed drive, which changes with the speed changes, the sleeve 17 is slid to the left so as to bring the gear 20 into mesh with the teeth 11a and the idler 21 into mesh with a wheel 22 fast on the driven shaft 14.
