Abstract
251,164. Worthington, R. C., and Milner, H. Sept. 14, 1925. Addition to 239,937. Variable-speed and reversing gearing comprises two-speed or three-speed epicyclic gearing in which the speed changes are effected automatically in accordance with the load by disengaging clutches by cams, and so allowing detents to act. The two-speed gear has a single train, and a further speed or speeds are obtained by adding a train or trains. Planet gears 17, Fig. 1, carried by the driven shaft 19 mesh with side gears 16, 25. The gear 16 is in the two-speed gear fast on the driving-shaft. The gear 25 is loose and is connected through coacting face cams 24, 23, Fig. 6, with a friction clutch member 22. The member 22 is normally held by a spring 26 in engagement with a friction surface 21 upon a planet-carrying casing 20. This clutch causes the train 16, 17, 25 normally to turn solid. On increase of resistance, the cams 24, 23 act to withdraw the member 22 away from the train, upon which the freed member 22 is picked up and prevented from running loosely backwards by a detent 29. The planets 17 then roll round on the fixed gear 25 yielding a reduced speed. The three-speed gear shown comprises a second train 5, 6, 14, a second clutch 11, detent 29, and pair of cams 12, 13. This train either drives the gear 16 solid with driving-shaft 2 or at a reduced speed. A reversing-gear is shown on the right. In the configuration shown, there is a forward drive of a tail shaft 34 from the shaft 19 through clutch pins 33b upon a sliding toothed gear 33. When the gear 33 is slid to the right, a reversed drive passes through a train 32, 38, 36, 37, 33. A middle position of gear 33 yields no drive.
