371,132. Variable-speed toothed gearing. STANDARD MOTOR CO., Ltd. and MAUDSLAY, R. W., of Standard Motor Works, Canley, Coventry. March 20, 1931, No. 8587. [Class 80 (ii).] Relates to countershaft three-speed gearing for motor vehicles of the type in which a constantly rotating lay shaft 7 drives a secondspeed gear-wheel 9 loose on the driven shaft 3 and in which a sliding wheel 11 splined to the shaft 3 carries end clutches 12, 13 for direct drive and second speed, respectively, a wheel 17 splined on the shaft 7 being engaged with the wheel 11 for first speed, the constant mesh gearing 5, 6, 8, 9 being preferably helical. The wheel 17 is locked in the position shown except when moved for first speed and constantly engages a long idler wheel 18, which is slid to engage the wheel 11 for reverse.
