Abstract

174,631. Matteucci, R. Jan. 27, 1921, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act] Variable-speed toothed or chain gearing of countershaft type is modified by the use of a friction epicyclic train which slides as a whole to effect a direct or clutch drive and the next lower speed, other speeds and reversed driving being effected as usual. The countershaft 3., through which and through gearing such is 6, 7, 8 the lower speeds are effected, is driven by a pinion 4 secured to the driving-shaft 1. The epicyclic train comprises friction planet gears 11 engaging a sun gear 17 and a split annulus 12. The gears 11 are mounted upon a carrier 9 splined on the driven shaft 2. The annulus 12 is carried by a disc 13 sliding on splines or dogs 16 on the shaft 1. In the configuration shown in Fig. 1, the sun gear rotates idly with reversed direction and there is no drive. The train is moved bodily by a fork &c. engaging a groove in a sleeve 19 secured to the sun gear. When the train is moved to the left, clutch teeth 15 upon the carrier 9 engage the dogs 16, and the shaft 2 is driven directly. When the train is moved to the right, teeth 21 upon the sleeve 19 engage a brake or stopping-device the effect of which is to cause the shaft 2 to be driven at reduced speed by the planet gears rolling on the fixed sun gear. This stopping-device comprises a fixed disc 23 with teeth 22 and a loose disc 34, Fig. 3, with like teeth 32. The revolving teeth 21 are first picked up by the teeth 32, causing the disc 34 to yield or turn. Fluid is then admitted through a duct 35 into a disc-shaped space A causing friction upon cone surfaces B to arrest the turning of the disc 34 until the teeth 21 can be made to engage the teeth 22 also.
