Variable-speed epicyclic gearing comprises stepped planet gears 12, 14. 16 rolling upon a fixed internally-toothed gear 44 and meshing respectively with sun gears 20, 21 adapted to be driven selectively and with a sun gear 31 adapted to be clutched to a driving-shaft 3. The gears 20, 21 slide freely on a driven shaft 4 in line with the shaft 3 and are arranged between two discs 1, 2 secured to the shaft 4. A clutch sleeve 29 sliding on a squared part of the shaft 3 can be slid into engagement with a clutch face 27 upon the disc 1 for a direct drive. The gearing is then at rest, the discs 1, 2 turning freely inside rings 5, 6 which carry the planet gears. For geared drives, the sleeve 29 is slid so as to engage a clutch face 30 upon the gear 31. The planet elements then roll on the gear 44 and the central gears 20, 21 are driven at different speeds, which can be communicated to the shaft 4 by sliding the gear required into clutch engagement with the disc 1 or the disc 2. Reversed driving is effected by sliding a gear 40 on feathers 41 on the shaft 4 into mesh with idlers meshing with additional planet gears 17. The gears 20, 21 are slid together by way of a sliding ring 52. By omitting the wheels 14, 20, a two-speed gear is obtained.
