A chain e, Fig. 1, driven by a sprocket f passes over and drives a set of chain-wheels d<1>, d<2>, d', d' mounted on spindles c<1>, c<2>, c<3>, c<4>. On these spindles are toothed pinions b<1>, b<2>, b<3>, which drive a toothed ring a alternatively for forward speeds, and a toothed pinion b<4>, which through an idler b<5> drives reversely. The pinions b<1> &c. may remain in mesh with the ring a, as shown in Fig. 3, being coupled to the chain-wheel d' &c. by clutches k, or the connexions may be made by sliding the pinions into and out of mesh, as shown in Fig. 4. In each case the speed changes are effected by selectively sliding the shafts c<1> &c. longitudinally, which may be done by a revoluble cam i.
