Abstract

172,497. Gardner, R. Nov. 13, 1920. Reversing-gearing comprising overlapping epicyclic trains brought into action alternatively by brakes effects a large speed reduction on both forward and reverse drives, and is suitable for turbine marine propulsion. A high-speed shaft 1 drives a wheel 3 through worm or other reducing- gearing. The wheel 3 is secured to a frame 4 carrying planet spindles 6, fast on which are pinions 9 meshing with a wheel 11 on a driven or low-speed shaft 12. Pinions 10 larger than the pinions 9 mesh with a loose sun gear 10<a> adapted to be held by a brake 10<b> for forward driving. Pinions 8 smaller than the pinions 9 mesh with a loose sun gear 8<a> adapted to be held by a brake 8<b> for reversed driving. These gear pairs may be of the double-helical type, and proper tooth mesh may be obtained by allowing sliding movement of the gears and by constructing the carrier 4 of rigid and yielding parts. The torque may be measured by an indicator 14, Fig. 3, attached to brake band 10<b>. Lubrication may be effected through an oil passage within the shaft 12.
