Abstract

140,565. Hemingway, W., and Hewlett & Blondeau. Feb. 24, 1919. Variable-speed and reversing gearing comprises stepped bevel planet-gears 15, 22 carried by a spider 20 secured to a driven shaft 25. The gears 15 mesh with a pinion 9 secured to a driving- shaft 1, and with a loose gear 29. The gears 22 mesh with loose gears 16, 24. A lever 50 is adapted to cause either clutch pins 12 carried by the gear 16 to engage recesses 19 in the spider 20 for a solid high-speed drive, or a toothed member 17 to engage teeth 14 carried by the gear 16 and hold that gear against rotation for reversed driving. A lever 52 is adapted to bring a toothed member 28 alternatively into engagement with teeth 26, 30 carried by the gears 24, 29 to hold these gears against rotation to effect two reduced forward speds. A modification is described having an additional planet and loose gear pair. A casing 6 encloses the gearing.
