Abstract

180,915. Lewis, A. F. June 17, 1921. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing comprises a sun gear f which slides on a fixed axle a. The driving-element u has internal teeth w meshing with planet gears t carried by the driven element n. In one extreme position the gear f engages clutch teeth on the element u, yielding a solid high-speed drive. In the other extreme position a brake functions to hold the gear f stationary yielding a reduced speed. The teeth of the gear f are cut back in alternate pairs, as shown at f<2>, Fig. 11, to facilitate engagement with the internal teeth x, Fig. 4. The brake comprises a drum b, Fig. 1, fixed to the axle a and having an eccentric bore b<1>, Fig. 8, adapted to be engaged by leather plungers e, Fig. 9, carried by a drum d which revolves with the pinion f. Recesses d<1> in the drum d are constantly engaged by wedge projections f<1> upon the gear f, and when this gear is moved to the right, the wedge surfaces thrust the plungers e radially against the bore b<1>. Operation is effected by a key j, rod l, lever 3, and cable 7, acting against springs g. The invention is adapted as a countershalt gear upon a motorcycle when the elements u, n carry chain-wheel y and pulley o respectively. An additional sprocket 1 is for starting.
