Abstract

146,668. Mason, W. May 1, 1919. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing comprises friction clutch members j connected to epicyclic train parts, which members are engaged after the engine clutch has been disengaged, so that the gearing turns solid with the driven shaft b, thus facilitating the engagement of a dog clutch u sliding on the shaft b. In one arrangement, a sun gear c secured to a driving-shaft a meshes with planet gears k, which mesh with an internally toothed ring i. Gears l secured to the gears k are connected through idlers (not shown), to a sun gear d loose and connected to a brake drum c. An internally toothed ring h is meshed by gears o secured to the spindles of the idlers or of the gears k. A carrier f of the planet gears carries a brake drum g. The rings h, i carry the friction members j and are connected to claw clutch member r, q in line with a like member s secured to the shaft a. The sliding member u is engaged with the member s for solid driving, with the member r for intermediate and low speeds, and with the members q for reversed driving, the appropriate member e or g being held against rotation. The clutch u and brakes are controlled by a lever 2, Fig. 6. Movement to left and right of Fig. 6 operates the clutch u through links 5, 6. Movement up or down of Fig. 6, by carrying with it a pivoted frame 3, operates one brake or the other through links 7, 7<1>. The frame 3 is connected by a link 12 to a toggle 10 which is straight in the neutral position when the brakes are off. A small extra movement of the engine clutch disengaging lever moves a part 14, which through a spring 16 and the alined toggle 10 moves a lever 11 to engage the friction members j, Fig. 1. In a modification, the element u is replaced by two sliding clutch members feathered one inside the other. In this case, the additional clutch operation is effected by a longitudinal movement of the lever 2.
