Variable-speed epicyclic gearing comprises a double clutch 8 by which sun gears i, h can be clutched alternatively or simultaneously to a driving-shaft a, A loose casing c carries planet gears 1, 2, 3 meshing with the gears h, i and with a gear l, which, in the simplest form, is fast on a driven shaft 4. When the casing c is held by a brake 5, two different forward speeds are obtained by clutching the gears h, i alternatively, and when the casing is freed, a solid drive is effected by the simultaneous clutching to the shaft a. A further ratio, which may be a reversed drive, is obtained by holding fast the gear h by a brake 6 applied to a drum d. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the gear l and another gear k are loose with respect to the driven shaft 4, and a second double clutch 9 and brake 10 provide for a further range of speeds. The clutch 8 comprises bands g, r, Fig. 2, which may be expanded and contracted respectively into engagement with clutch drums d, e by the longitudinal sliding of a two-part sleeve m, n, Fig. 1. The separately-movable sleeve parts m, n carry pins engaging slotted cranked levers p, p<1>, which through spring links x, z and bell-crank levers t, t<1> apply the clutch bands. The links x, z, which may be of the alternative forms shown, allow the levers p, p<1> to be moved to locked dead-centric positions with one or both clutches applied.
