Abstract

406,313. Change-speed gearing; facilitating changing speed. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D., and WILKINSON, G. S., 211, Acton Vale, Acton, and SEWELL, C. W., 2, Holly Park, Finchley, both in London. Aug. 22, 1932, No. 23473. [Class 80 (ii).] Change-speed gearing suitable for vehicles of the kind comprising coaxial driving and driven shafts 43, 45 and a parallel lay shaft 48 in which changes are effected by changing the engagement of toothed wheels or claw clutches is adapted to be combined with auxiliary variable-speed gearing to synchronize revolving teeth in gear changing. To this end is provided a rotary sleeve 53 constantly driven from the driving-shaft 43, surrounding the driven shaft 45, and projecting outside the casing 42 of the main change gearing. The lay shaft 48 which is constantly driven by a pair 49, 50 from the driving-shaft may be used in addition for synchronizing some speed by means of an extension 48a also projecting outside the casing 42. The sleeve 53 is, in the arrangement shown, integral with a loose gear 52 constantly driven from a gear 51 fast on the lay shaft. First and second speeds are effected by sliding to right and left coupled pinions 58, 57 splined on the lay shaft 48 so as to bring these gears into mesh respectively with gears 55, 54 splined on the driven shaft 45. Third and fourth speeds are effected by sliding the coupled gears 55, 54 to right and left so as to bring their claw ends 62, 60, respectively, into engagement with claw clutch members 63, 61 on the gears 52 and 49. When the coupled gears 55, 54 are slid from neutral, the coupled pinions 58, 57 are moved similarly at the same time to prevent mutual engagement. Means for effecting this combined movement in combination with means for operating when and as required the auxiliary variable-speed gearing shown in Fig. 1 is described and is described and claimed in Specification 406,315. Other constructions of auxiliary variable-speed gearing described are described and claimed in Specifications 406,316 and 406,314 respectively.
