Abstract

377,039. Change-speed gearing. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES., Untertiirkheim, Stuttgart, Germany. Oct. 22, 1931, No. 29392. Convention date, Oct. 29, 1930. [Class 80 (ii).] Change-speed gearing suitable for vehicles comprises aligned driving and driven shafts 1, 2 supported in a casing at 4, 6 and one within the other at 5, and an intermediate loose hollow shaft 3 supported on one or on both. A countershaft 9 is geared constantly to the shaft 1 by a pair 8, 7 and carries a loose gear 10 in constant mesh with a pinion 12 fast on the shaft 2. Slidably feathered on the hollow shaft 3 are disengageable gears 14, 16 and a dog clutch 18. With the clutch 18 engaging a clutch face of the pinion 12, as shown, the first three speeds are effected respectively by engaging the gear 16, the gear 14, and a face clutch 17, the last being direct drive. An overdrive is effected by disengaging the clutch 18 and engaging a clutch 11 feathered on the shaft 9 with the gear 10. These clutches, which may have bevelled dog ends, may be operated in unison by a lever 19 so as to have no idle position.
