306,139. Holmgren, S. A. Feb. 16, 1928, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Variable-speed gearing. - Comprises a separate friction clutch for each speed put into action selectively by a governor 42 driven from the driven shaft 21. There are four countershafts 6, 7, 8, 9 for three forward speeds and reversed driving, each shaft being adapted when moved to the right of Fig. 1 by a spring 25 to put in a friction clutch 22 between the selected shaft and a gear 16, 17, 18, or 19 upon it. The gears 16 - - 19 are constantly in mesh with a gear 20 fast on driven shaft 21. The shafts 6 - - 9 are geared to a driving-shaft 1 by pairs of different ratio with a reversing idler 14 in the case of shaft 9. The springs 25 press upon plates 24 fast on the shafts 6 - - 9. Normally an annulus 26 retains all the plates 24 so as to maintain all the clutches 22 inactive. The governor 42 acts through a gear train 30, Fig. 3, to turn the annulus 26 so as to bring gaps 44 opposite the plates 24, and so allow the shaft 6 - - 9 corresponding to be thrust by its spring to engage the clutch 22 upon it. The annulus 26 may alternatively be turned manually.
