Abstract

142,644. Reading, H. C. April 22, 1919. Variable-speed friction gearing suitable for motor-vehicles comprises one or more transmission rollers such as 6, Fig. 1, between disks such as 1, 2, a supporting idler such as 7, and means such as 4 for clutching certain loose elements to their shaft. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, motion is transmitted between the shafts 3, 5 through the roller 6 and one of the disks 1, 2 when engaged by the clutch 4. This arrangement may be duplicated by having two rollers such as 6 geared together co-acting with three or with two loose disks. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 5, rollers 42, 43, which slide in unison, are pressed between a driving-disk 40 and an idle disk 41 loose upon a driven shaft 40<a>. The shaft 40<a> is connected through toothed gearing 52, 51 to a shaft 46 which is adapted to be clutched alternatively to the roller 42 or the roller 43 by means 48, 49. An arrangement having a stepped cone 33, 34, 35 sliding on a driving-shaft 37 is shown in Fig. 4. Co-acting loose disks 27, 28 adapted to be clutches alternatively to a shaft 36 are separated to allow the stepped cone to move in changing speed. The idler is shown at 38.
