Abstract

11,781. Synoe, F. O., Jeffryes, H., and Sheen, J. H. Aug. 14. V a r i a b l e - speed gearing.-In epicyclic or other variable - speed friction gearing, conical rollers engage an outer conical casing and an inner shiftable roller. The conical ends a<2>, a<3> of rollers a, Fig. 3, carried in a cage c, on the driving-shaft f, engage conical surfaces on a stationary casing d, the central part a<1> of the rollers being formed of steeper conicity than the ends, so that they present parallel sides to the driven roller h on the shaft g, although there is proper contact of the parts a<2>, a<3>. An adjustable spring j keeps the parts in driving contact. Levers k, k<6> are pivoted together, and one k is pivoted to the casing d and linked to the shaft g, and the other k<6> bears on the end c<2> of the cage c so as first to shift the cage and release the pressure and then to shift the roller. The rollers a may be carried by blocks sliding radially in the cage. A second roller forming a driving- member may be arranged co-axially with the roller h and be moved at the same time as that element, or a toothed wheel engaging toothed wheels on the rollers a may be employed. Any of the parts may form the stationary member.
