Abstract

8444. Small, A. B., and Small, C. C. June 7. Variable-speed gearing comprises a driven shaft 9, a countershaft 10, and a driving-shaft 5, which may be moved so as to drive through a clutch member 7 on its end either of these shafts. In the configuration shown in Fig. 1, the shaft 9 is driven directly, and gear pairs connecting the shafts 9, 10 are all at rest. Three reduced speeds and reversed driving are obtained through the shaft 10 by way of sprockets b, d, f and a toothed gear h fast on the shaft 10, the sprockets a, c, e and a toothed gear g loose on the shaft 9, silent chains i, and movable double clutch members 18, 19. The members 18, 19 are operable from one laterally-movable lever 24. The shaft 5, which is driven through a universally jointed shaft 3, is movable laterally in a slidable bearing 28. The member 7 is adapted to engage female cones 8, 11 on the ends of the shafts 9, 10, and is held in the engaged position by a spring 13, Fig. 5, arranged between two portions 1, 1<1> of a shaft connecting the shaft 3, Fig. 1, to an engine clutch 2.
