Abstract

Variable-speed toothed gearing, suitable for motor - vehicles, comprises a driving - shaft A, Fig. 1, with a loose driven sleeve Z near one end, a loose gear E near its middle, and a fast gear D near its other end. A lay shaft C has loose gears D<2>, E<2> meshing with the gears D, E, respectively, and a fast gear F<2> meshing with a gear F fast on the sleeve Z. The speed changes are effected by sliding double-ended clutches G, H operated by forks connected to pins J, K, Figs. 7 and 8. The pins J, K pass through slots L<2> in a guide-tube L and are operated by a plunger 0, blocks M, N, and springs P, P<2>. As shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the clutches G, H engage the gears E, E<2>, respectively, through which power passes to effect the middle speed. When the plunger O is moved to the right, the clutch H is carried over into engagement with the gear D<2> to effect the low speed, the clutch G remaining where it was. When the plunger O is moved to the left from its mid position, the clutch G is carried into engagement with the sleeve Z to effect the high speed, the clutch H remaining in engagement with the gear E<2>, which is idle.
