Variable-speed gearing suitable for motorcycles comprises a shaft C which has a feather connexion F with a non-slidable driven sleeve E and is normally kept thrust to the right by a spring I, so that a clutch member N fast upon it engages a member M on the end of a driving- sleeve U. In that configuration, there is a direct drive through the members M, N, shaft C, and feather F. A gear S loose on the shaft C is connected through countershaft gears R, 0 to a gear L fast on the sleeve U. When the shaft C is thrust to the left by a spindle D, a clutch member P on the gear S comes into engagement with a member Q on the sleeve E. power then passing at reduced speed through the countershaft. In the direct-drive configuration, the idle gearing is driven from the gear L at a slower speed than if it were driven from the gear S.
