Abstract
168,091. Defordt, J. F. April 8, 1920. Variable-speed and reversing ratchet gearing comprises a driving-shaft 1 and an aligned driven shaft 15, which may be alternatively clutched thereto to a hollow shaft 7 driven from a countershaft 2 through variable-throw eccentrics 6 and ratchet clutches 8. The shaft 2 is driven from the shaft 1 through gearing 5. The eccentrics are operated in unison by a screw 32. A sleeve 16 feathered on the shaft 15 has internal teeth 20, which may engage a clutch head 19 upon the shaft 1, or a like head 19<a> on the sleeve 7. For reversed driving, a gear 21 sliding on a second countershaft 22 is meshed with external gear teeth 25 on the sleeve 16. A -free-wheel clutch 35 is provided to prevent the shaft 7 overrunning the shaft 1, as when a motor vehicle is running down-hill.
