Abstract

165,479. Browse, C. W. E. Jan. 2, 1920. Variable-speed ratchet gearing comprises an eccentric 7 slidable on a key on a driving-shaft 1 in company with levers 11 which it oscillates. The free ends of the levers 11 act in succession upon other levers 22 pivoted upon the shaft 1, which levers are oscillated and transmit a vari-- able drive in one direction through ratcho clutches 20 to a drum 16. The drum 16 is loose .on a driven shaft 2 in line with the shaft 1. A double clutch 14 sliding on the end of the shaft 2 connects the drum 16 thereto or alternatively releases the drum and engages a member 9 on the shaft 1 for direct driving. The eccentric 7 and levers 11 are connected by a non-revoluble frame 12 to which the levers are pivoted at 26. A lever 35 varies the speed by sliding the frame 12 to which the clutch 14 is coupled by a rod 23. During the direct drive, the levers 11 are lifted clear by fixed inclines 24. The shaft 2 may be. driven reversely through bevel-gearing 29, 30, 31 when the clutch 14 is neutral. The invention is applicable to motor vehicles.
