Abstract

Turning-gear.-In a starter for motor-vehicle engines of the kind in which a starting motor drives through the gear box, the starting motor drives a sliding pinion f adapted to engage a gear wheel i keyed to the driving shaft within the gear box. As shown, the pinion f slides on a shaft c driven through chain gearing from an electric motor mounted on the side of the gear box b, and the wheel i is immediately in front of, and may be integral with, the constant-mesh pinion k of the gear box. The pinion f may be moved by means of a fork g on the selector rod h which operates the reverse, the gear lever being moved into a special compartment of the gate to effect movement of the pinion. In operation, the main engine clutch is disengaged, the gear lever is moved to the starting position, the electric motor is switched on and allowed to gain momentum, and the clutch is engaged to enable the engine to be started. The clutch is then disengaged, the switch released, and the gear lever returned to neutral.
