Abstract
368,135. Reversing-gear for boats. PORTER, F., Sandridge Works, Whetstone, London. May 6, 1931, No. 13354. [Class 114.] Reversing-gearing for motor-boat propulsion is controlled by a lever 19 which is pushed forward and aft to effect ahead and astern driving, respectively. The lever 19 is connected by a rod 14 to a cam quadrant 21 which disconnects the engine clutch 29 while a double dog clutch 10 is being shifted. A striker 12 for the clutch 10 is slidably carried on the rod 14 between two springs 15. The clutch 10 slides on a square part of a propeller shaft 1 and is moved forward to effect a direct drive from a clutch shaft-2. A countershaft 5 is connected by a spur pair 3, 4 to the shaft 2 and by a chain 7 to a sprocket 8 loose on the shaft 1. When clutch 10 is shifted aft, a reversed drive is effected through the gearing. This reversing- gear can be readily obtained by modifying a conventional vehicle gear-box. The clutch 10 preferably carries a disc 33 which can be braked when passing through neutral to facilitate dogclutch engagement. A brake 32 may be a fixed device engaged by the disc as it passes, or a band applied by the striker 12 in transition. A modified form of reverse gear is described in which the drive is taken from the parallel shaft 5 which carries the double clutch slidable between loose spur and chain gears 4, 6. The aligned shaft 1 is in that case secured permanently to the main clutch shaft 2.
