Abstract

Driving-arrangements for screw propellers.-A reversing gear for propeller shafts comprises brakes which for forward running couple the motor shaft with the casing of an epicyclic gear, for reverse running maintain the casing stationary, and also provide for free engine. The motor shaft a and propeller shaft c are coupled by epicyclic gears b in a casing which extends forwardly at b<1> and has attached thereto a brake drum e and loose drum d. Two free discs f, g carry cam discs, of which the cam i has an after arm j adapted to 'be moved by a pin d<1> in the disc d, and the other cam has a forward arm adapted to be moved by a pin m<1> on a sliding collar m keyed to the shaft a. The discs f, g are provided at the bottom with a weight s. For forward running with control lever p in position, the pin m' engages the forward brake lever, whereby the brake band l is applied to the drum e, so fixing the gear casing with respect to the shaft a. For reverse running with lever p in position II, the pin m<1> of the driver m is disengaged, and the crank lever o is moved to put on the brake of the drum d and the pin d<1> in turn puts on the brake band l which keeps the casing stationary and so gives reverse running through the bevels. In the position o, no drive is communicated to the shaft c.
