195,385. Coursier, E. J. E., and Piestrak, C. S. March 22, 1922, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing.-One member of an epicyclic gear for motor vehicles &c. is controlled either by a brake or by a liquid pump so as to obtain either definite forward or reverse speeds or automatically controlled speed changes. A pinion 7 on the driving shaft 6 gears with double pinions 8, 11 loose on an arm 9 carried by the driven shaft 10. The pinions 11 gear with loose wheels 12, 13, the wheel 12 being provided with braking means and the wheel 13 being connected to the casing 14 of a pump. This casing carries pinions 15 meshing with pinions 16 on the shaft 6 to form a gear pump, the oil or other liquid being supplied to the casing through mlets 18 and exhausted through outlets 21. The outlets 21 are controlled by a spring-pressed valve 20 which may be operated by a lever 23. When the outlets 21 are fully closed, the gear rotates solidly; normally the pressure of liquid acting on the valve 200 against the spring pressure provides automatic means for throttling the exhaust and thereby varying the speed. By braking the wheel 12, the gear drives independently of the pump control and by braking the casing 14 a reverse drive is obtained. Other forms of epicyclic gears or pump may be employed.
