Abstract
425,870. Reversing-gearing. BONGIOVANNI, L., 1, Piazza Vittorio Veneto, Turin, Italy. Aug. 10, 1934, No. 23142. Convention date, Aug. 11, 1933. [Class 80 (ii)] In an arrangement for reversing the rotation of the propeller of an aircraft to facilitate landing, a gear wheel 4 secured to the driving shaft 2 meshes with planet wheels 5 mounted on axles 6 in a spider 7 and has teeth 4 normally in engagement with teeth 10 of a disc 9 slidably mounted on the shaft 2. To effect the normal operation of the propeller, the disc 9 is moved towards the wheel 4 until outer teeth 10 engage with teeth 7 of the spider 7 so that the gear wheels 3, 4, 5 and propeller shaft 1 are driven as a single unit. The reversal of the propeller is controlled by a lever which through Bowden wire mechanism rotates a member 14 carrying an eccentric 13 operating brake shoes 11 associated with the spider 7. The shaft of the eccentric also carries a sleeve 15 having a slot 15<1> partly circular and partly helical engaged by a pin 16<1> on an operating arm 16 of the disc 9. When the teeth 7, 10 are moved out of engagement, the planets 5 roll idly on the wheel 3 until the brake has been applied to the spider 7 when the shaft 1 is reversed through the gear train 3, 4, 5. The engagement and disengagement of the clutch teeth 7, 10 is facilitated by opening the ignition circuit of the engine during the movement of the control lever, (Fig. 3 not shown), from one position to the other.
