Abstract

161,618. Newton, F., and Newton Bros. (Derby), Ltd. Nov. 27, 1919. Planing. - The double epicyclic gear shown, is arranged for driving and reversing at the same or at different speeds by rendering different elements the fixed gear in the train by means of brakes. The gear comprises a transmission shaft 18 carrying a sun-wheel 8 driving pinion 7 in a planet-carrier 6, to which are fixedly secured a brake-drum 19 and the sunwheel 4. The latter meshes with the pinions 3 of a second planet-carrier 2 forming part of the driven-shaft 1. A drum 5 has internal teeth meshing with the pinions 3 and 7 and carries the brake-wheel 16 by means of the end plate 10. Direct or reverse driving is effected by braking the wheels 16 or 19 respectively. The gear is stated to be specially suitable for planing machines and when so applied, the brakes are operated by the movement of the machine table. In one such application, Fig. 2, the brake bands 20, 21 are linked to springs 22, 23 controlled from the table projection 29 through the links 24, 26. The release of the brake 20 by compression of the springs 22 is accompanied by the lever 26 tripping the spring 23, thereby applying the brake 21. The gear is duplicated for similar operation at each end of the stroke, and dashpots may be used to ensure gradual application of the brake.
