Abstract

194,573. Liardet, A. A., and Berk, F. W. April 13, 1922. Driving-gear for winding and paying- out apparatus; self-sustaining gear; stopping automatically at end of run; regulating and control-transmitting gear.-Comprises two constructions of hoisting-gear, for operation by hand and power respectively, of the type in which the drum is driven through epicyclic gearing fitted with two brakes or with a brake and a pawl-and-ratchet device. Fig. 1 shows a two-speed hand-actuated gearing employing one brake and a pawl and ratchet. The driving shaft A can be moved axially to bring alternatively - acting sun pinions D<7> into engagement with double planet pinions D<3>. By applying the weighted band brake D<8> to prevent rotation of the planet pinions, the drum D is rotated through a plain or compound spur drive for hoisting. Pawl-and-ratchet mechanism C<1> prevents the shaft A from running in the reverse direction, so that when the brake is released, the load runs down by gravity and rotates the gearing as a whole round the fixed sun pinion. A pivoted lever engages-one or other of the notches A<2>, A<3> to secure the driving-shaft in its adjusted position for each speed. Figs. 4 and 5 show power-driven gearing arranged for a continuously-running motor and fitted with interlocked brakes. The gearing is arranged on an intermediate shaft A connected by spur gear to the drum shaft D<x>. In this case the planet pinions form the driven members communicating movement to the drum, and braking of the planet pinions by means of the band D<8> stops the drum and sustains the load. When a brake D<9> is applied to a loose ring, the planet pinions are rotated for hoisting. The brakes are interconnected so that they cannot both be applied simultaneously, but both can be released at the same time. When both brakes are released, the load runs down by gravity. For controlling the two brakes, a shaft G, Fig. 5, can be rocked to either side of the mid-position illustrated. Rocking in either direction releases the brake D<8> by raising the weighted lever L through the medium of the double lever G<1>. On the other hand the brake D<9> is tightened through the medium of the crank arm F' when the shaft is rocked clockwise, and released when it is rocked anticlockwise. Specification 135,358, [Class 103 (i), Brakes &c.], is referred to. A stop operated by the moving load may be linked to the brake lever to return it to mid-position.
