Abstract
121,784. Macfarlane, G. T. Dec. 28, 1917. Winches; brakes; driving-gear.-The chainlifter of a windlass for casting and weighing anchor is freely mounted on its shaft and connected to a brake drum through a free wheel or like device so that the chain-lifter can be rotated freely in the hoisting direction when the brake is on. The chain-lifters f are mounted at each side of a spurwheel d, which is fixed on the shaft e and gears with a pinion c freely mounted on the driving- shaft a. Sun wheels b of epicyclic gearing are fixed to the shaft a and gear with planet pinions g mounted in carriers m, p, which are mounted freely on the shaft a and fixed to the pinion c, respectively. The pinions g gear with teeth h carried by brake drums j, k, which are respectively freely mounted on the shaft a and fixed to the pinion c. A brake drum o is keyed on the boss n of the carrier m. By holding the brake drum o or j and releasing the other drums, the pinion c can be driven in either direction. The actuating levers for the brake bands are associated so that when one brake is on the other is off. Drums r fixed on the shaft e are connected to the chain-lifters f by sliding bolts s or by pawls w engaging ratchet teeth t, the former connexion causing the rotation of the lifter in the hoisting direction and the latter in the lowering direction. Each chain-lifter is connected to a brake rim x by a free-wheel device, which permits rotation of the lifter in the hoisting direction only when the brake is on.
