Abstract

239,863. Soc. Anon. Rachlis, Dupin, et Cie. Sept. 10, 1924, [Convention date]. Variable-speed gearing.-In an epicyclic change-speed gearing as described in Specification 216,106, the planetary pinions engage on the inside with a central gear wheel preferably having roller teeth, and on the outside directly with the rollers of a chain which is guided on a rail secured to the planet carrier. In the application to a bicycle shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 5, the planet pinions d are carried between discs a, g, the disc a being secured to the pedal crank b. The central gear wheel o carries rollers r and is supported and positioned by its engagement with the sides of the planet pinions. The chain runs on rails k carried by the disc a, the rail being cut away in parts to allow the teeth of the planet wheels to engage the rollers of the chain. A pawl u carried by the disc a permits rotation of the planet wheels in one direction only. A pawl t operated by a cable d<1> is moved into or out of engagement with ratchet teeth on the interior of the central wheel o to give the high or low speed. When the wheel o is held stationary, the planet pinions roll thereon and the chain is moved more rapidly than the ring k, while, when the wheel o is free, the pawls m lock the planet wheels d and give a solid drive. In a modification, the central gear wheel is carried by a ball bearing on the hub of the pedal.
