Abstract
477,608. Winches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and MACFARLANE, G. T. June 2, 1936, No. 15371. [Class 78 (v)] In a winch the main power shaft 5 is worm-geared to the drum shaft 8 and is coupled to the coaxial motor shaft 4 by epicyclic or other differential gearing 3. The internal tooth-race 21 for the epicyclic gearing is carried by a ring 22 fixed to the shaft 5, and the sun wheel 20 is fixed to the shaft 4, while the planet wheels are mounted on a cage 19 fixed to a hoisting-brake drum 16. A clutch has its sliding male member 14 rotatably fixed on the shaft 4, the female member 15 forming part of the drum 16. A holding and lowering brake 32 mounted on the outer end of the shaft 5, may be connected thereto by a free wheel 30, or may have its actuating gear interconnected with that of the brake 16 so that brake 32 is released as brake 16 is applied and is re-applied as brake 16 is released. The motor 12 rotates the cage 19 idly when the brake 16 and clutch 14, 15 are open, the brake 32 being on. On applying brake 16 the cage 19 is held stationary and rotation is imparted to shaft 5 and barrel 11, and whenever brake 16 is taken off, brake 32 holds the load in hoisted position till this brake is released. To drive down an empty hook the clutch 14, 15 is engaged, whereupon drum 16 is rotated with shaft 4, and through the epicyclic gear 3 drives the shaft 5 at higher speed in the reverse direction. Means for unifying the controls comprises a hand-wheel 36 bevel-geared to a shaft 41 carrying cams 60, 61 which actuate the brakes 16 and 32 respectively, and a screw 47 on which rides a nut 48 or alternatively a helicallygrooved sleeve in which engage pins extending from a yoke. The nut 48 or the yoke rock a spring-retracted lever 52, which throws the clutch 14, 15 in or out of action. Thus, when the wheel 36 is in medial'position brake 32 is on, brake 16 is off, and clutch 14, 15 is free. On turning the wheel 36 in one direction the brake 16 is applied for hoisting ; on turning it in the opposite direction, first the brake 32 is released and then, on further turning, the clutch 14, 15 is engaged and the hook driven down. The epicyclic and worm gears may run in oil, and cooling vanes &c. may be mounted on the brakes and clutch. A counter-weight or a spring may restore brake 16 to its off position. An end warp 80 may be carried by the shaft 8, and the barrel 11 may be readily released from the drive of its shaft 8 by a removable abutment 81. A single motor 12 may drive a plurality of barrels 11. Specifications 404,158 and 477,655 are referred to.
