Abstract
477,641. Winches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and MACFARLANE, G. T. Oct. 14, 1936, Nos. 27876 and 34413. [Class 78 (v)] A winch-drum 6 carried loosely on a shaft 11 has a gear wheel 26 meshing with a pinion 27 fixed on a parallel lay-shaft 9. The drum 6 is driven by the shaft 11 through an epicyclic gear comprising a sun-wheel 12 fixed to the shaft 11, planet wheels 14 carried by a cage 15, and an outer ring 20 fixed to the drum itself. The cage 15 is bolted to a gear-wheel 17 meshing with a pinion 19 loose on the shaft 9 but rigid with the drum 30 of a hoisting brake. The shaft 9 carries at one end a oneway holding and lowering brake 28, and medially the sliding male member 35 of a clutch, the female member 36 of which is rigid with the pinion 19. For hoisting the brake 30 is applied, thus holding the pinion 19 and the cage 15 fixed, and allowing the shaft 11 to rotate the drum 6 with a two or three to one reduction. When the power is taken off, the one-way brake 28 holds the load, which can be lowered by loosening the band of brake 28. For forcing down an empty hook, the member 35 of the clutch, normally held open by a counterweight, is closed against the member 36 to lock the shaft 9 to the pinion 19. Both brakes 28 and 30 being off, the shaft 11 then through the wheel 12 and planets 14 rotates the wheel 17 and thus turns the drum 6 through pinions 19, 27 and wheel 26 at a high speed in the reverse direction. Interlocking means for preventing the brakes, clutches, &c. being operated in the wrong sequence consists of a hand-wheel 40 which reciprocates a slide 42 through pinion and rack 44, 43. A projection 45 extending from the slide 42 forces aside a crank lever 47 which effects slackening of the brake 28 against the on-pull of a weight 52. Further movement of the slide 42 in the same direction brings a second projection 46 against a lever 55 which inserts the clutch member 35 through a link 54 against the off-pull of a weight 56. Return movement of the slide 42 first declutches members 35 and 36, then applies the one-way brake 28, and finally through projection 45 moves a crank lever 48 to apply the hoisting brake 30. The brake 30 may be arranged to slip with excess load to protect the motor. The brake 28 may be a twodirectional one, the levers 47, 48 and 55 being then so intercoupled that the brake 28 is automatically released as the brake 30 is applied and vice versa, it being also independently releasable. The provision of the lay-shaft 9 permits smaller sized brakes and clutch, and the layout is stated to permit of ready conversion of existing winches. A warp end 10 rotates with the drum 6. Specifications 477,608, 477,641, and 477,655 are referred to.
