Abstract

128,681. Macfarlane, G. T. Dec. 28, 1917. Winches; brakes; driving-gear; self-sustaining gear.-Winches for handling ship's cargo are driven by epicyclic gearing, or gearing of the differential type, arranged on a shaft located otherwise than in line with the winch barrel. The driving-shaft e, Fig. 1, and the shaft which carries the winch barrel b and warping-drums d are parallel and are connected by gears o, m. The gear m. is keyed on the boss of a brake drum k provided on its inner surface with teeth which are engaged by planet-pinions h mounted in a carrier f free on the shaft e. The sun-wheel g is keyed to the shaft e. Pawls n mounted on the brake drum k engage a ratchet-wheel p keyed to the shaft e and control the speed of lowering as described in Specification 115,054. In one direction of rotation, the pawls n are held out of engagement with the ratchet by links connected to blocks arranged to slide in grooves in the ratchet-wheel as described in Specification 114,650. One of the members of a friction clutch s forms the boss of a brake drum r which is keyed to the carrier f. The brake rims of the drums k, r are made separate from the drums proper as described in Specification 112,242, and may be connected to the drums by ratchet mechanism or to rotate freely in a hoisting direction even when the brake is applied fully. The pedal 2 and the hand-lever (not shown) for actuating the brake bands of the drums r, k are connected by a pivoted arm 1 so arranged that, when one lever is depressed to apply a brake, the other lever is raised to release the other brake. A weighted arm 5 tends to keep the brake applied on the drum k. The winch described above may be connected to three similar winches, Fig. 6, and driven by a vertical steam-engine 10 through gearing 11. The engine is preferably of the type which, upon being driven backwards by a falling load, acts as a brake and forces steam towards the boiler. In a modification, the planet-pinions h do not gear directly with the drum k, but are fixed on short spindles carrying other planet-pinions which gear with a toothed wheel freely mounted on the shaft e and formed integral with, or rigidly connected to, the pinion m and drum k. In another modification, the drum r, carrier f, sun-wheel g, and ratchet-wheel p are mounted on a sleeve keyed to the shaft e, and the pawls n are mounted on a ring formed with flats which engage corresponding flat faces formed within the drum k.
