Abstract
111,421. Pearson, J., and Parker, L. E. April 18, 1917. Brakes for paying-out apparatus; regulating; self-sustaining gear. - In pulley-block hoisting and lowering gear, the weight of the load is transmitted to two segmental brake bands, of which one is always in contact with the brake drum and the other can be moved out of contact at will. One end of the chain a which supports the usual pulley block (not shown) is attached to a lever b which is pivoted at the end c and at the other bears upon a bar g connecting the arms h<1>, i<1> of the pivoted brake bands h, i. The brake i always bears against the drum j, but the brake h can be taken off by rotating the shaft n thereby forcing a roller l against a projection k at the upper end of the band. The shaft n is rotated in one direction by pulling a chain &c. attached to the lever o, and in the other by a weight s or spring. The hoisting chain wheel (not shown) is discon. nected from the first-motion spindle p when the brake is released to lower the load by a scroll on the quadrant g moving the clutch member r. Running back of the load is prevented by pawls u carried by radius arms, or by a disk v, secured to the spindle p which engage ratchet teeth t on the inner face of the drum j.
