Abstract

Driving-gear for winding and paying-out apparatus; brakes. - The pawl and ratchet braking- mechanism described in Specification 114,650 is fitted to one end of the coil of a coil clutch mounted on the driving-shaft of a winch or the like, so that if the load under gravity lowering exceeds a predetermined speed, the pawl mechanism is actuated automatically to cause the coil to connect the drum to the driving-shaft for a positive downward drive. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the driving-shaft 2 rotates constantly in the same direction and drives the drum 1 through epicyclic gearing (not shown). The brake coil 5 is secured at one end 6 to the drum and surrounds a disc 4 fixed on the driving- shaft and having a ratchet-wheel 12 fixed to its outer face. The free end of the coil carries pawls 11 connected by links to blocks 15, which slide in a circular recess in the face of the ratchet-wheel into which they are pressed by plate springs 17 on the links. During hoisting, the drum, coil, and pawls turn clockwise as seen in Fig. 2, while the driving-shaft turns counterclockwise. The effect of this is to tend to bring the links into a radial position, thus lifting the pawls clear of the ratchet-wheel to prevent clattering. During gravity lowering the drum, pawls, and driving- shaft turn counterclockwise. When the drum overruns the driving-shaft, the pawls overrun the ratchet-wheel and cause the inner ends of the links 17 to lag sufficiently to: bring the pawls into engagement with the wheel and thus tighten the coil to connect the drum positively to the driving- shaft. To provide for a positive downward drive of the unloaded rope or of a light load insufficient to run down by gravity, a second coil may be used operated independently by lever-mechanism to grip the driving-shaft at will. In some instances one or two convolutions of the main coil may be utilized as the subsidiary coil.
