Abstract

256,405. Marks, E. C. R., (Puller Manufacturing Co., Inc.). Aug. 24, 1925. Winches ; brakes ; driving-gear; self-sustaining gear.-The drum of a winch is free on its shaft and two oppositely-acting transmission means of different speed and power ratios are placed between it and the shaft so that the drum may be rotated continuously in one direction through both of the transmission means by rocking the shaft in opposite directions, or may be rotated continuously through either transmission means by rotating the shaft continuously in one direction or the other. An arm 4, Fig. 1 fast on the shaft 2 carries a pawl 5 that can be engaged with or disengaged from ratchet teeth 6 on a flange of the drum 3. A pawl 10 mounted on a similar arm 9 engages a ratchet 11 on a gear 12 loose on the shaft 2. A pinion 13 mounted on the framework engages with the teeth 15, Fig. 3, on one of the drum flanges, and also engages the gear 12. The squared ends of the shaft 2 may be engaged by a lever, or crank, or a driving pulley may be mounted thereon. When both pawls are in engagement with the ratchets and the shaft 2 is rocked in opposite directions, the drum will be rotated in one and the same direction. If one of the pawls is disengaged, the drum is rotated intermittently in the same direction as before when the shaft is rocked. The drum may be rotated continuously by rotating the shaft 2, and in this case the pawl not used for driving acts as a self-sustaining gear. The drums housing the ratchet gears are formed externally with ratchets 20, 21 which are engaged by pairs of pawls 22, 23 and 24, 25 forming low speed driving devices. These devices are of similar construction except for their power and speed ratio. The pawls 22, 23 are carried by a rocking member 26 having a squared end 28 to which a handle mav be fitted and having a stop member 29 which limits its movement by coming into contact with abutment surfaces 30, 31. Each pawl has pins 45 which receive between them springs 46, 47 carried by a pivoted pawl disengaging member 48 controlled by a lever 50. A pivoted stop 32 when turned to engage the member 29 keeps the pawls in neutral position. The outer circumference of the ratchet wheel 6 forms a brake surface 53 and is engaged by a brake band 54, the ends of which are attached to a rocking member 55 provided with a handle 56. A ratchet 57 on a handle 56 is engaged by a pawl 58 which can be disengaged by a brake release lever 60. The winch is mounted on road wheels 62.
