Abstract
234,909. Cantlie, K. March 7, 1924. Free-wheel gearing. - Comprises a ratchet differential gear in which pairs of ratchet wheels 18, 19, are mounted on the axle shafts 2, 20 and are engaged by pairs of pawls 6, 10, 11, 15 carried by the driving member 1. The teeth in each pair of ratchet wheels are set for opposite directions of rotation. The pawls 6, 10 face in opposite directions and are mounted on a shaft 5 loosely carried by the member 1, the pawl 10 being fixed to the shaft while 6 is connected to the shaft through a spring 7 having a pin and slot lost-motion connection with the shaft. Similarly the pawl 15 is fixed on a sleeve 4 loose on the shaft 5 while the pawl 11 is connected to the sleeve through a spring 12 and a lost-motion connection. The spring and lost-motion connection of the pawls is such that when one pawl is engaged with its ratchet wheel the other pawl of that pair is held clear of its wheel. Thus when the member 1 is rotated in one direction the drive passes through the pawls 6, 15, while the pawls 11, 10 drive in the reverse direction. Either side but not both can over-run the driving member. In a modification the pairs of pawls may be separated 180‹ from each other on the driving member.
