Abstract
537,974. Differential gearing. EVANS, T. F. Dec. 12, 1939, No. 32064. [Class 80 (ii)] Differential gearing, particularly applicable to motor vehicles, comprises a pinion 2 on the propeller shaft 1 engaging a crown wheel 3 on a web 4 freely mounted on the divided back axle 5 on each half of which is fixed a member 6, 7 adapted to be driven from the web 4 by plunger pawl element 8, 9 floatingly mounted for endwise movement in the web. Each plunger element presents at its outer end a protruding wedge and each driven member 6, 7 presents to the web 4 a circularly pitched series of V- shaped notches 11', Fig. 2, between which are flat segmental areas 11. The plunger elements may be solid as in Fig. 7, or in two parts 8, 9, Fig. 4, urged apart by a spring 12. To prevent rotation of each plunger about its axis, it may be formed with a notch 8*, 9* adapted slidingly to engage a ridge 6*, 7* on the face of the adjacent driven member. Alternatively the plunger halves may be castellated at their inner ends to form interengaging keys, or each may have a single slot for the reception of one sliding key. The wedge-shaped ends of the plungers comprise a steeply-inclined driving face 15a, Fig. 7, and a less steeply-inclined trailing face 15b, the notches in the members 6, 7 having corresponding sides 11a, 11b. With this construction of differential it is not possible for one of the vehicle wheels to spin idly while the other remains at rest.
