Abstract

249,933. Stott, J. H. Jan. 5, 1925. Differential gearing comprises two coupling members which drive positively by interengaging dogs mounted for limited relative rotation, so that one driven element may over-run to a limited extent. As applied to a vehicle, after rounding a curve a road whel slips to equalize the drive. Each coupling member preferably comprises an intermediate sleeve member 7 with an internal dog 8, Fig. 2, engaging a dog 5 on one main member 1 and an external dog 9 engaging an internal dog 17 upon another main member 12, so that more than one revolution of lost motion is possible. The dogs may be cushioned at 18. The element 1 may indicate a through shaft and 12 each of the wheel hubs. Or, as shown in Fig. 4, the element 12 may drive two shaft elements 1. The dogs may be adapted to project axially instead of radially as shown.
