Clutches, ratchet; differential or balance gearing.-In free-wheel or differential gearing of the kind in which the driving shaft or axle h is formed with a screw thread k at each end having a double coned nut m adapted to engage with internal coned surfaces on the wheel hub, the nut is caused to lag behind the screw by means of an eccentrically disposed ribbon spring t fixed to the nut and bearing against the wheel hub so that in whichever direction the shaft h rotates the nut travels along the screw until one of the coned surfaces bears against and drives the wheel hub, while leaving the wheel hub free to over-run the shaft. The cone clutches may be arranged at the middle of the shaft h or this shaft may be a countershaft driving the cone clutches on the axle.
