Abstract

719,116. Reverse gearing. FOSSATI, E. Sept. 26, 1952, No. 24251/52. Class 80 (2) [Also in Group XXXI] Mechanism for driving separate driven shafts 1, 1<SP>1</SP> comprises a single driving shaft 11 on which is a gear wheel 19 in permanent mesh with an intermediate gear wheel (not shown) itself meshing a toothed annulus 5 mounted on or secured to a clutch member 6, 6' free for rotation on the two contiguous driven shaft ends. the driving shaft 11 being separately connected through reverse gear trains 9, 21 and 9', 21<SP>1</SP> and clutches 10, 16, 10<SP>1</SP>, 16' to each driven shaft, which is in turn provided with a clutch member 8, 8' co-operating with the clutch member 6, 6<SP>1</SP> on the toothed annulus 5, clutch operating means being provided for actuating the clutches in such a way that the two driven shafts can be driven in the same sense or in opposite senses. The bosses of the toothed annulus 5 fits into sockets in the ends of the driven shafts and are located axially with respect thereto by anti-friction balls in the ends of the sockets, the clutch members 8, 8' having prismatic connection with their respective shafts 1, 1<SP>1</SP> and the gears 9, 9' being keyed to these shafts. The gears 21 are integral with the clutch members 10, free for rotation on the driving shaft 11, the clutch members 16 being splined thereon and being spring-urged to engage with the cooperating members 10. The device is described as applied to a motor vehicle, such as a tractor, which it is used to steer, the driven shafts 1, 1<SP>1</SP> being connected to the vehicle road wheels. Under normal driving conditions, both clutches 10, 16 and 10', 16<SP>1</SP> are engaged, and the clutches 6, 7, and 6<SP>1</SP>, 7<SP>1</SP> disengaged, so that both shafts 1, 1<SP>1</SP> rotate in the same direction. To change the direction of movement of the motor vehicle, one of the clutches on the driving shaft, e.g. the clutch 10, 16, is disengaged and the corresponding clutch 6, 7 is engaged, whereby the driven shaft 1 is rotated in the opposite direction to the shaft 1<SP>1</SP>. The intermediate sprocket between the gear 19 and toothed annulus 5 may be driven by the vehicle change-speed gear; the ratios between the alternate trains differ.
