Abstract

352,687. Variable -speed gearing. LAW, C., 3, Brentmead Place, Golders Green, London. June 17, 1930, No. 18486. [Class 80 (ii).] Variable-speed gearing comprises worm or spiral epicyclic gearing in which the speed is varied by adjusting resiliently the amount of friction in two similar toothed pairs. Upon a disc B fast on the driving shaft A is carried a spindle C with a worm G at one end and a spiral pinion E at the other. Worm G engages worm wheel J fast on driven shaft K. Pinion E engages spiral-toothed wheel M capable of a limited angular displacement relatively to shaft K. A spring R connects wheel M to a sleeve P having a helical connection with a sleeve S slidable on a straight spline on shaft K. The gear pairs GJ and EM are of the same ratio so that in the position shown in Fig. 1, the pinions G, E run idly round on the wheels J, M without driving. When sleeve S is slid towards wheel M, sleeve P is turned and spring R strained. Friction or grinding action is set up in the toothed gearing which causes shaft K to be driven. The speed is controlled by the position of sleeve S. A second spiral wheel N engaged by pinion E is loose and serves to equalize the action, like a flywheel. A second worm and pinion set is shown in Fig. 2 to increase and balance the drive.
