Abstract
346,521. Variable-speed gearing. STURMEY-ARCHER GEARS, Ltd., 177, Lenton Boulevard, and WILKIE, W., 30, Newstead Grove, both in Nottingham. Feb. 22, 1930, No. 5906. [Class 80 (ii).] Variable.speed gearing yielding four speeds comprises four pairs of constantly meshing gears e f, g h, i j, k on main and lay shafts a, b. If a is the driving shaft, a loose sleeve c upon it is the driven element. One wheel of each pair, g, k and f, j, is loose on its shaft and the other h, l and e, i is keyed, the loose and keyed wheels alternating on each shaft. The four speeds are effected by moving to extreme lateral positions each of the keyed wheels of the inner pairs, that is the wheels i, h, which are formed with double clutch faces for the purpose. The complete gear shown is adapted for a motor cycle by being supported in a pivoted casing n. The control gears i, h may be moved from side to side by a double cam device geared up from a hand control as described in Specification 346,255.
