Abstract

245,531. Riley, A. J. Oct. 15, 1924. Variable-speed and reversing gearing comprises a pair of variable transmission levers 20, 20a, Figs. 1 and 4, each acting through link 18 and a pair of racks 15, 16 and alternatelyacting ratchets 14 to drive a shaft 7 continuously in one direction. The levers 20 are pivoted at their ends to a fixed support 21 and at their other ends have slots 22 to receive two driving cranks 23 arranged in quadrature. The links 18 are jointed to the double racks and to slides 19, which are moved up and down the levers 20 in unison to vary the speed by a control device 29. This device 29 is an articulated frame comprising a bar 28 passing through slots 27 in the links 18. The shaft 7 is hollow and through it passes a spindle 1 adapted to be driven in either direction through a toothed reversing-gear 8, 13, 11, Fig. 4. For direct drive, pinions 8, 11 are snapped together into clutch engagement and clear of crown wheel 13.
