Abstract

Variable - speed gearing comprises an interconnected pair of intermediate gears 3, 4 between or across which the power may pass, which are moved bodily to effect the speed changes in unison with another pair or set which may be the driven gears 5, 6. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 9, power passes from a driving-gear 1 through gears 4, 3 to gear 5, and then through a clutch 9 fixed on the driven shaft C. When the coupled group of gears 3, 4, 5, 6 is moved one step to the right on shafts B, C, power passes through the train 1, 4, 6, 9. For a third speed, the gear 3 is enmeshed with a second gear 2 on the driving-shaft A and the clutch boss of the gear 5 engages a second clutch 10 on the shaft C. The train 2, 3, 5, 10 is operative. A further step to the right for a fourth speed brings the clutch boss of the gear 6 into engagement with the clutch 10, rendering the train 2, 3, 4, 6, 10 operative. The coupled group is operated by a simple slotted lever. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 8, the coupled group of gears 3, 4, 5, 6 is moved to a less extent and a double clutch F splined on the shaft C is also movable. This dual operation may be effected by a single lever 4, Fig. 3. An enlarged cam head T on the lever imparts relatively large stepped displacements to the carrier E of the wheel group. A toothed sector R and rack Q imparts smaller displacements to the clutch F.
