Variable-speed gearing yielding three speeds comprises three pairs of toothed gears, the middle gears 13, 15 being splined on a driven shaft 5 and a countershaft 7 respectively, and being moved in opposite directions in changing speeds. The gear 13 has a clutch 14 on each face, the gear 15 no clutch, as the countershaft end gears 6, 10 are both fast. When the gear 13 is moved to the left, a clutch end 3 on the driving shaft 1 is engaged, yielding a solid drive. The countershaft is constantly driven from the shaft 1. The next speed is obtained when the gears 13, 15 intermesh. The third speed is obtained when a clutch face 14 engages a clutch 11 on a loose wheel 10. Striking-forks 16, 17 envelop the sliding gears as shown in Fig. 3, and slide on guide bars 18, 19 being engaged by the ends of a medially pivoted lever 20 actuated from a lever 27 outside the gear case. Locking in proper positions is effected by a spring bolt in the casing engaging recesses 24 in a plate 23 carried by a pivot. shaft 26.
