498,033. Variable - speed toothed gearing. PLAVSIC, N. April 30, 1937, No. 12423. [Class 80 (ii)] In speed-controlled variable-speed gearing for automobiles, a nest of gears 15 on the driving-shaft c gears with corresponding wheels 16 .. 19 loose on the driven shaft d and carrying a radial series of clutch teeth 23, 22, 21, 40 (not shown) adapted to be engaged by clutch teeth 20 on blocks 28, sliding in a drum 27 on the shaft d and formed with racks engaging pinions 25 gearing with racks on centrifugal blocks 24 which are pressed radially inwards by curved springs 31 and carrying projections 29 engaging successively with and brushing past blade springs 26 to check oscillation of the blocks and ensure rapid changes of gear. Increase of speed of the driven shaft d thus moves the blocks 24 outwards and the blocks 28 inwards step-by-step to increase the gear ratio. The shaft d is formed with gear-wheels 6, 8 for driving respectively the ultimately driven shaft 3 either forwardly through a double gear wheel 5 gearing with a wheel 7 on the shaft 3 or reversely through gearing 9, 10, 5, 7. In the latter position of the shaft a carrying the wheels 5, 10 clutch pins 13 may be moved by a lever 11 to engage the blocks 24 to maintain the lowest speed drive in action for reverse gear. The clutch pins 13 may be brought into action by the driver to lock the lowest forward gear in operation and similar clutches may be provided to maintain other gears in action.
