Combinations of two variable-speed gears; reversing-gearing.-A simple countershaft arrangement adapted to yield. two speeds in the same direction, or two speeds in opposite directions, is used in series with a main change-speed gear in order to double the range of speeds, or to yield a reversed speed for each forward speed. Driving and driven shafts 12, 13 are arranged in line, with a parallel countershaft 19. A double splined clutch 24 sliding on the driving-shaft engages a clutch face on a gear 20 fast on the shaft 13 for direct driving. For the indirect drive, the clutch 24 engages a clutch face on a gear 22 loose on the shaft 12. For speeds in the same direction, there is one countershaft 19. For speeds in opposite directions, there is an additional countershaft. An arrangement is described for connecting up the drive of other mechanism such as a fire pump. This comprises a further shaft mounted in the gear casing 11 parallel to the shaft 19 splined and carrying a toothed gear slidable into mesh with a gear 26 on that shaft.
