Variable-speed gearing comprising coupled gears slidable into mesh alternatively upon a splined shaft is modified so that the driving torque is transmitted squarely to the splines or the like on the shaft. The splined connection extending on one side only of the engaged gear is done away with. Thus the coupled gears c<1> c<2> are slidable on splines b' on the shaft b so as to engage respectively one at a time with wheels a a<1> fixed on another shaft. In one arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the splines b<1> between the gear positions are cut away on their flanks b<2> so that there is no contact with the splines except between the faces of the gear in action. In other arrangements, the coupled gears are free to move angularly relatively to one another. Thus in Fig. 3 there is a screwed connection e. The application to the pair of slidable idlers of a reversing train is described.
