Abstract

204,218. Caton, C. H. Oct. 6, 1922. Variable-speed gearing yielding four forward speeds employs six toothed gears 1 - - 6 adapted to .mesh in pairs, and the speed changes are effected by the aid of a double clutch 2<c> splined on the driven shaft B and clutch ends 1<a>, 3<a> on the movable gears 1, 3, respectively. The gears 1, 3 are splined upon driving-sleeve A and countershaft C, respectively. The gears 2, 6 are loose and separate on the shaft B. The gears 4, 5 are loose on the shaft C but joined by a sleeve. The speeds entrain the following elements respectively; A 1 2 B; A 1 3 4 2 B; A 1 2 4 5 6 B; A 1 3 4 5 6 B. Reversed driving is effected by a double gear 7 slidable into mesh with the gears 3, 2. Operation may be effected by means described in Specification 192,218.
